Good news!! The doctors told me this morning that all Mary's blood cultures are negative, so whatever virus or bacteria she contracted prior to or during birth will remain a mystery. It could have been something she got from me in utero (I had some infections during the pregnancy) or it could have been something introduced during labor and delivery (do you have any idea how many different peoples' fingers and probes and tools and instruments were placed inside of me during that 7 hours?????) She was definitely sick, with dramatically elevated blood counts (C-Reactive Protein, Complete Blood Counts and White Blood Cell Counts), a fever, "sallow" coloring, 2 incidences of apnea, and lethargy. I'm glad the Lord brought it to the nurses' attention before we got home last Tuesday morning.
The best news: Mary was required to have 21 doses of Ampicillin (every 8 hours since Tuesday) and 7 doses of Tobromyacin (once daily). Her last dose of Ampicillin is tomorrow morning at 7AM and her last dose of Tobromyacin is at 4pm today. So she will be discharged tomorrow (Tuesday) morning!!!!!!!! Hooray!!!! There are audio specialists in here right now testing Mary's hearing. It's a more throrough test (all the way up the nerve into the brain stem) than the normal screening they did earlier of the outer ear and cochlea. One of her antibiotics (tobomyacin) has an occasional side effect of hearing loss, so they test every nicu baby's hearing more thoroughly before discharge as they approach the last round of that particular antibiotic. Oh, they just told me she passed in both ears. . . no worries for her hearing!! Praise the Lord with us for her health, access to great health care, the super nursing staff, a comfortable sofa bed so I could room-in with her this week, awesome insurance, and our homecoming tomorrow!! Thanks for praying, visiting, bringing food and taking the boys. You have been God's hands to our family this week.

We rejoice with you that Mary is coming home (or probably is already by this time)! Thank you for sharing the roller-coaster ride that was your journey over the past few weeks! We pray that your adjustment home will go smoothly and that she won't have any lingering affects of that mystery infection. She is absolutely beautiful!
